When gym clothes smell bad, the instinctive response is to add more detergent. Unfortunately, this often makes the problem worse.
Excess detergent doesn’t rinse out easily, especially in cooler or shorter cycles. Instead, it coats fabric fibres, trapping bacteria and odour beneath the surface. Over time, this build-up reduces breathability and locks in smells.
More detergent also interferes with how activewear is designed to perform. Residue blocks moisture-wicking properties, causing sweat to linger longer in the fabric.
Effective gym laundry relies on balance, not excess. Using the correct amount of detergent and ensuring proper rinsing allows fabrics to release what they’re holding onto instead of layering it deeper.
